Around 122 million dairy farms (IFCN estimate) are producing milk which constitutes 363 million milking cows and buffaloes. This means that the world's average farmer keeps 3 milk animals with an average annual milk yield of approximately 2100 kg/animal/year. Of course, building averages is an oversimplification. There is a wide range of dairy farms in the world keeping less than 3 cows per farm on the one hand and on the other hand in some countries, dairy farms are much bigger and keep over 1000 cows per farm.
