Major Infectious Diseases — Current Challenges Impacting Dairy Animals

There have been remarkable advances in therapeutics and vaccinology during the 20th century, yet infectious diseases remain among the leading causes of economic losses in farm animals for three reasons: (a) emergence of new infectious diseases; (b) re-emergence of old infectious diseases; and (c) persistence of intractable infectious diseases.This module will attempt to highlight some of the major infectious diseases of dairy animals that can have a great impact on the production of the animal and result in economic losses through decreased productivity or death and we try and relate our experiences to animal disease strategies and attempt to identify with recent developments for further applications. Prevention and control strategies chosen must be in keeping with the characteristics of the pathogen, its transmission patterns, environmentalstability, its pathogenesis and threat to animal health, productivity and profitability.
