DMS Shows the Way

Delhi Milk Scheme (DMS) was set up with a noble mission in 1959 as a part of the then Union Ministry of Food and Agriculture which is presently the Department of Animal Husbandry Dairying and Fisheries. Its objective was to supply wholesome milk to consumers of Delhi and pay remunerative prices to producers. It was inaugurated by the first President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Pandit Jawahar Lai Nehru, the first Prime Minister, also graced the occasion. It was the first ever dairy in the organizedsector in India and established its main plant at Shadipur, Delhi. Milk Collection and Chilling Centres were also set up around the main plant. Milk was collected at these centres and brought to the main plant in Shadipur Depot. Distribution outlets or booths were set up across Delhi. Since it was the only organized Dairy at that time, the demand for DMS milk was very high. Unfortunately, within years of its establishment, DMS turned into a den of mismanagement and misappropriation. It was abuzz with Union activities and political interferences.
