Earlier, it was perceived that hydroponics fodder can only be grown in costly and hi-tech green houses. The ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Old Goa and Govind Milk and Milk Products Pvt. Ltd., Phaltan, Satara, Maharastra, played major roles in facilitating farmers of the Satara district of Maharashtra in developing low cost 'greenhouses' for production of hydroponics fodder. Greenhouses can be fabricated from bamboo, wood, MS or GI pipes and brick masonry. It can also be made as a lean-to structure using one side wall of the house, which reduces the cost of fabrication. The irrigation of hydroponics fodder can be through micro-sprinklers (manually or automatic controlled), knapsack sprayer or a rose can at frequent intervals. About 17 farmers of theSatara district of Maharashtra are producing and feeding their dairy animals with hydroponics fodder using different types of greenhouses. Besides, about 10 farmers have taken initiative for producing hydroponics fodder in low cost greenhouses.
