Planning and Drilling of Horizontal Wells -A Case Study

The use of horizontal drilling technology in oil exploration, development and production operations has grown rapidly over the past five years. Horizontal drilling technology achieved commercial viability during the late 1980's. The technical objective of horizontal drilling is to expose significantly more reservoir rock to the well bore surface than can be achieved via drilling of a conventional well. This objective stems from the specific physical characteristics of the target reservoir. The aim of this paper is to review the basics of planning and drilling of a horizontal well. The factors which are most important at the planning stage of a horizontal and the operational factors for the successful drilling of horizontal wells are presented. A case study of an oil well of ONGC Ltd at the Lakwa Oil Field (Assam Asset) is presented, with a comparison of the planned profile and the actual profile, which shows the success of the planning process.
