Farmers are amongthe privileged few who may have seen a stone-curlew this year. Each spring, this rare wading bird flies to southern England from southern Europe or north Africa. The stone-curlew arrives in March and departs in late October or early November. It is a threatened but recovering Schedule 1 species, with just 350 breeding pairs. In the South East, it is found on downland or arable land on light soils. The population would decline by 4% annually without the help of farmers working with conservationists.
