The DIY digester: A member's E1.2m self build is paying off in energy generation and reduced farm waste

:FARMERS ARE WELL KNOWN for being able to build pretty much anything if it means saving time or money. But a business partnership in Gloucestershire has taken that notion to the extreme by building a EUR 1.2m anaerobic digester. James Hart, a pig farmer from near Fairfield, teamed up with chicken farming neighbour Jeremy lies and the pair have saved hundreds of thousands of pounds by building the 3,000 tonne digester unit with minimal help and a government grant. Alongside the money saved during thebuild, the digester uses farm waste and adds more than EUR20,000 a month to the business in sales of surplus electricity to the National Grid.
