ENERGY COMPANY Cuadrilla has taken a step towards being able to restart the controversial process of fracking to extract gas from shale rock. Operations were suspended last year when test operations were blamed for triggering two minor earthquakes onthe Lancashire coast. Hydraulic fracking uses tiny explosions to shatter and crack shale rock to release shale gas, or oil, trapped inside. An expert review by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said in April that it was safe to resume the technique, providing changes are made to the operational procedures.
