Atlanta's Hartsfield International is one of the busiest airports in the world, and one of the most susceptible to flight-schedule delays, according to government statistics. During an average month, Hartsfield handles more than 63,000 aircraft operations and 6 million passengers. The four-run-way, 3,750-acre airport is smaller than many other world-class airports. Yet Hartsfield's management predicts that the facility will have to handle as many as 121 million passengers each year with a corresponding rise in air traffic by 2015. Without further improvements to accommodate this expected growth, flight delays are forecast to reach unacceptable levels in the not-too-distant future.
