Formation and thermal rearrangement of 4,4'-diarylmethyl-2,2'-diaryl-4,4'- biimidazolin-5,5'-diones

Recrystallisation of 4-arylmethyl-2-aryl-2-imidazolin-5-ones from ethanol results in the formation of 4,4-diarylmethyl-2,2'-diaryl-4,4'-biimidazolin-5,5'-diones. These products undergo a McLafferty type rearrangement to give one molecule of 4-arylmefhyl-2-aryl-2-imidazolin-5-one and one molecule of 4-arylidene-2-aryl-2-imidazolin-5-one under mass spectrometric conditions. The same rearrangement is also found to occur on heating the compounds just above their melting points.
