Predominance of Zn deficiency in divergent soils of India to the extent of about 50 per cent has become one of the major constraints in achieving the target of 300 mt of food grain production by 2020, The extensive research work carried out on Zn in relation to Zn requirement of important cereal crops and cropping systems for last 4 decades in different parts of the country. The responses to Zn application and technologies generated for amelioration of Zn deficiency to increase crop yields have been reviewed. The low cost technologies for improving NUE like addition of Zn-enriched organics and Zn management in salt affected soils for increasing yields of cereals have also been reviewed. The results of the studies carried out for evaluation of different sources, their rates, methods, frequencies and time of application in important cereals have been reviewed and judicious use of Zn on sustainable basis has been suggested. The Zn management through blending with major nutrients, complex fertilisers, and incorporation in customized /multi-micronutrients mixtures has also been indicated.
