Leveraging Mobile-based Technologies for Sustainable Agricultural Development in India

In the current times agricultural extension services are meant to provide critical access to the knowledge, information and technology that farmers require to improve the productivity and promote sustainable livelihoods. It is imperative to provide the knowledge and information in a quality and time-bound schedule. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)-based solutions are being increasingly advocated by extension practitioners for sustaining agricultural production and evolving robust and smart marketing systems. The Extension and Advisory Services (EAS) are embodied in various ICT-enabled services ranging from traditional radio programmes using add-on features, to television shows, to using short messaging services (SMS) to request information on farming practices, to the popular mobile technology services and the internet. The present paper examines the present day extension technologies in realization of the goal of sustainable agricultural development in India. The study examines the effectiveness of modern ICT tools using mobile-based technologies for better dissemination of information.
