Energy conservation is given top priority at NFL Vijaipur. Over the years, several energy conservation measures have been taken towards reduction in specific energy consumption and improvement in energy efficiency. The measures include process optimisation, recovery of low grade heat, better operation and maintenance practices and implementation of energy saving schemes. The efforts resulted in reduction in specific energy consumption from 6.27 GCal/tonne at the beginning to 5.835 GCal/tonne of urea in 2011-12 at Vijaipur I and from 5.82 GCal/tonne to 5.434 GCal/tonne of urea in 2011-12 at Vijaipur II. Further a major revamp of all plants is underway. Most of the schemes for energy conservation have been completed and few will be completed during 2012. The revamp projects are expected to result further reduction in energy consumption of ammonia and urea plants at Vijaipur. The paper describes some of the major schemes implemented or under implementation both as part of revamp projects as well as in-house initiatives.
