The zirconyl(IV) complex of 2,6-diacetylpyridine-bis-(semicarbazone) (DAPSC), zrO(DAPSC)H2OCl2or Zr (OH)2(DAPSC)Cl2, and its reactions with diketones are described. The complexes so obtained have been characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, electrical conductance, and infrared spectral data. The parent complex reacts with #x3B2;-diketones to form complexes of the type ZrO(mac)H2OCl2or Zr (OH)2(mac) Cl2where mac is a macrocyclic ligand derived by the condensation of DAPSC and #x3B2;-diketones in the presence of metal ion. The reaction of the parent complex with 2,6-diacetylpyridine has also been studied. The types of cyclic products viz., mononuclear ZrO(mac')H2OCl2or Zr(OH)2(mac') Cl2and binuclear Zr2O2(mac')(H2O)2Cl4or Zr2(OH)4(mac')Cl4, where mac' is a macrocyclic ligand derived from DAPSC and 2,6-diacetylpyridine, have been isolated by carrying out the reactions by different methods. The infrared spectra of these cyclic products are reported.
