Troponoid liquid crystals and gelling agents

摘要

5-Cyanotroponoids with a trialkoxybenzoyloxy or a trialkoxybenzoylamino group at C-2 position showed columnar phases. The corresponding benzenoid esters and amides were not mesomorphic. Only mesomorphic troponoid amides could gel organic solvents such as hexane, cyclohexane, alcohols, DMF, and DMSO. We proposed the packing model of columnar phases and the mechanism of gelations from X-ray diffraction studies.
