Acetoacetanilides 1 react with the ylidenenitriles 2 to give the substituted pyridines 4,5,10 and 11 respectivley. Reaction of 1 with ethyl cyanoacetate and elemental sulphur in ethanolic-triethylamine yield 2-aminothiophenes 14. Condensation of phenylhydrazone 15 with malononitrile affords pyridine 19.
