Synthesis of some 1,7-disubstituted biphenylene and studies of their lithiation reactions

The synthesis of 1,7-disubstituted biphenylene including (A; R = OMe, F and NO_2), and an investigation of their lithiation reactions is described. The study has been carried out in order to form reactive substituents at positions 1 and 8 or (4 and 5) and subsequent coupling to give derivatives of (B).
