The Union Budget proposal to accord infrastructure status to investments in fertiliser production is a major breakthrough in policy towards' attraction of investment in the fertiliser sector. That should help fertiliser producers to access cheaper financing and gain in tax breaks. Fertiliser Industry welcomes the proposal. Notwithstanding fertiliser industry being benchmarked as one of the best in the world in terms of energy efficiency, safety and environmental measures, no new investment came in the fertiliser sector since 2000 as the policies were not conducive for new investment. Imports kept on growing.
