The #x201C;Energy Era#x201D; of the 1970s has compelled dispersion resin users to examine all techniques which can extend their supplies of raw materials. Lower pound/volume products are attractive for this purpose since, in addition to stretching their compounding ingredients, they also offer economic advantages. Cellular or foam-type products have their limitations, however, when ultimate physical properties such as tensile, compression resistance, and tear strength are critical parameters. Many properties, however, can be upgraded when a gas is incorporated into the final product. Unique #x201C;hand#x201D; flexibility, softness, and resilience are representative characteristics which can be achieved easily with foamed products. Manufactured items currently taking advantage of these properties include sheet goods flooring, coated fabrics (which are later converted to upholstery, wearing apparel, handbags, footwear), flotation gear (life jackets, boat bumpers, fish net floats), carpet backing and underlays, cushioning, gaskets, shoe linings, rainboot linings, ink pads, and athletic padding.
