Winter Sweet Corn Cultivation under Drip Fertigation A Profitable Crop for Peri-urban Areas of Delhi

Sweet corn (Zea mays L.saccharata) is one of the most popular vegetable in countries like USA and Canada and it is also becoming popular in several Asian countries including India.Mostly the farmers in India do not understand the difference between ordinary maize and sweet corn.Generally maize and sweet corn is grown as Kharif crop in northern plains of India and due to large availability of this crop in markets farmers do not get good price of their good varieties.Sweet corn planted in the month of September to mid-October in peri-urban areas of Delhi can fetch very high price of the produce in the market On the other hand sweet corn crop can be grown successfully under drip fertigation for saving 30-40% water and fertilisers.The cost-benefit ratio of the sweet corn crop planted in first week of September was calculated 1:4.49 with a net profit of Rs.85535/ha.
