As the plants are becoming more modern, the maintenance technology is getting upgraded. Now the large ammonia and urea plants are single stream plants which are expected to run continuously for at least two years. The standard of maintenance has to cater to this requirement. During the last 20 years, the concepts in maintenance have changed to a large extent. The emphasis has been changing from break down maintenance to preventive maintenance to predictive maintenance and the modern concept is of pro-active maintenance (Total Productive Maintenance).Recently the effect of globalisation is being felt on the fertiliser industry very acutely. In the changing scenario the plant has to be run at an optimum load, high reliability, high availability, lowest energy consumption and with reduced maintenance cost. The demand on the maintenance standards has increased. Side by side various modern techniques have developed to achieve the above mentioned requirements. Condition based maintenance, on line maintenance, improved engineering practices etc., have helped today's maintenance engineer to meet these exacting demands.
