The benefits of apprenticeships: Diana Williams on why an apprenticeship was the right route to farming for her

FARMER'S DAUGHTER Diana Williams knew from an early age that she wanted to work in agriculture. Aged 16 she enrolled at Duchy College to study for the National Certificate in agriculture and now - four years on - is in the final weeks of the scheme with a Leyel 3 Diploma and four years' practical experience under her belt. Alongside working on her family's beef farm near Helston in Cornwall, Diana attended college for two days a week in her first year on the scheme. The second year then focused on crop management and livestock husbandry and Diana gained her NVQ Level 2. In her third and fourth years she spent one day a week at college studying for a Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Agriculture, funded through an Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme.
