Performance of Boronated NPK in B Deficient Soils

Fifty-five field experiments were conducted in the farmers' fields to study the efficacy of IFFCO produced boronated NPK(10:26:26:0.3 B),as a source of boron(B),vis-a-vis NPK.(10:26:26)in three states viz.,West Bengal,Jharkhand and Orissa on four types of B deficient soils(alluvial and terai soils of West Bengal,red-lateritic soils of Jharkhand and sandy soils of Orissa)with nine crops in the Rabi season of 2003 and 2004.The experiments were continued with the same layout for the succeeding Khariflpre-Kharif crops(rice and jute)to study the residual effect of boronated NPK with respect to NPK.In case of Rabi crops boronated NPK increased yield of all the crops tested to the tune of 4.3 to 66.7%,6.0 to 22.9%,1.9%,9.4%,2.4 to 27.2%,4.8%,5.4%,15.1% and 5.0 to 16.2% for mustard,wheat,lentil,coriander,potato,tomato,chilli,groundnut and cauliflower,respectively,over the NPK alone.For the succeeding crops,boronated NPK also resulted in increase in grain/ fibre yield of rice and jute to the extent of 1.0 to 5.1% over the NPK only.The benefit:cost ratio of the crops for boronated NPK also varied from 8 to 128 indicating the usefulness of the product for the vast B deficient area of the eastern states of India.
