Effect of Zinc Application with Different Saline Waters on Soil Properties and Wheat Yield

The efficiency of zinc application with different saline waters on soil properties under wheat cropping system was studied in pot experiment on sandy clay loam soil. The experiment was laid out in CRD with four qualities of irrigation water (W0, W1 W2, W3) and four levels of zinc (0, 5, 10, 15 mg Zn kg~(-1) soil). The increased levels of EC_(iw) significantly increased the EC_e ESP and SAR of soil but they decreased pH_s and available P. Zn application to soil had no significant effect on EC_e ESP, SAR, pH_s, available N and K, while there was significant decrease in available P with increase in zinc levels. High EC_(iw), significantly reduced the grain and straw yield while zinc application to soil had favourable effect on grain and straw yield of wheat. The comparative reduction in grain and straw yield of wheat was less at higher doses of zinc sulphate when the level of EC_(iw) increased in irrigation water. Hazardous effects of saline water on wheat yield can be mitigated to some extent by applying zinc sulphate at the rate of 15 mg Zn kg~(-1) soil.
