The paper deals with a unique case history of handling the failure of Synthesis Converter Shell in an innovative way.Instead of retrofitting the converter with the identical design of Synthesis Converter with S-200 Basket,an S-300 Basket Converter has been installed in parallel to the existing weak converter.The basket with S-300 design from Haldor Topsoe has been configured in the shell meant for S-200 converter basket.The parallel installation will be helpful to isolate the weak converter in running without plant outage at a later date.Such a modification has been implemented for the first time in India which has resulted in capacity augmentation of ammonia back-end,energy efficiency improvement and facilitated the reliability in an economical manner It was an enriching experience for the team who have handled the project successfully as major part of scheme was executed when the plant was on-stream.
