Cooling Towers Water Treatment Systems in Fertiliser Plants

Cooling towers are an essential part of fertiliser plant operations.It is so mainly from the angle of water conservation.The luxury of using once through water for cooling purposes is no longer available.Water chemistry is involved in the use of water in a closed loop such as cooling towers.Use of water chemistry is made to minimise the corrosion in cooling water,scaling tendency and biological control.The paper discusses the systems used in cooling water treatment to meet these requirements.Cooling towers are made of wood with an expected life of about 25 years or so but due to deficiencies in the treatment systems adopted and lack of proper maintenance practices,failure of cooling towers may occur in a shorter period.In order to avoid premature failure of cooling towers review of cooling water treatment and maintenance practices should be done regularly.Over the past one-decade or so,a lot of developments have taken place in cooling water systems like on-line monitoring of different parameters involved and automatic control of cooling tower operations.In the light of this,upgrading of existing systems needs consideration.
