Role of Human Resource Development in Improving Agriculture Productivity

Indian agriculture needs renewed attention to improving farm production and productivity, Human resources, along with man-made capital and natural resources, are essential for development of agriculture. Capacity building through education and training lie at the heart of development efforts. A major thrust needs to be directed to Human Resources Development (HRD), involving all aspects from basic education to technical one, including formal and informal approaches to creating and transferring skills. The paper suggests a relevant HRD Knowledge-Skill (KS) framework that will form the strategic platform and guides all HRD interventions in the agricultural sector. The current HRD effort will need different orientation to produce tangible results with regard to improvement in agricultural productivity at farm level. In addition policies that create, strengthen and support HRD systems in agriculture should be given high priority given their economic and employment importance in most developing countries.
