Fertiliser Transportation and Infrastructural Constraints

The inadequacy of transportation infrastructure in the country has been cause of concern for quite some time. This is not compatible with the projected growth rate of economy. The transport bottlenecks continue to hamper the development of agriculture particularly due to non-availability of fertilisers on various accounts. This article provides a bird's eyeview of fertiliser transportation in the country. The problems and developments in various segments of transportation such as railways, roads, inland water transport and coastal shipping have been outlined. Also the impact of new transport subsidy policy has been evaluated. The article tries to address the issues with a multi-modal perspective and suggests ways and means for debottlenecking of transport infrastructure.
