Yield Maximisation of Rice-Wheat Cropping System through Balanced Nutrition in North-West India

On farm experiments were conducted in central plain zone of Punjab (Amritsar - Tarn Taran) during 2010-12 to study the effect of N, P, K and Zn on rice yield and that of N, P, K and Mn on wheat yield in rice-wheat system. The results of the study showed that the maximum grain yield of rice (78.0 q ha~(-1)) was recorded where balanced application of N, P and K was applied along with zinc. Similarly, in case of wheat also, maximum grain yield of 48.3 q ha~(-1) was reported under N+P+K+Mn treatment but this was marginally higher over N+P+K application. The lowest yield of rice-wheat system was recorded in control plots which were 46.8 q ha~(-1) and 28.0 q ha~(-1) for rice and wheat respectively. The per cent increase of 31.8%, 51.3%, 43.8%, 61.5%, 66.7% and 48.0 % for rice and 45.0%, 61.2%, 52.5%, 71.4%, 72.5% and 63.2% for wheat was obtained under different treatments over their respective control yields. The grain yields of both rice and wheat significantly vary from each other under different treatments.
