Efficient management of fertilisers is crucial to achieve the objectives of productivity, profitability, sustainability and environmental health in cropping system management. Within each of the four general principles of efficient fertiliser management - right source, right rate, right time and right place, there are a number of specific practices which can be classified as fertiliser best management practices (BMPs). These are site-specific, crop specific and vary from one region to another depending on soil, climate, crop, Cropping history and management expertise. Possible fertiliser BMPs for nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium have been discussed from the angle of increasing agricultural productivity on a short-term as well as cumulative crop yield response over time. Future outlook for fertiliser BMPs has also been given.
