Disaster Management and Control in Fertiliser Plants

Modern day industrial operations involve use of very large volumes of materials involving the risk of fire and explosions,and release of large amounts of materials that are toxic in nature.Besides industrial operations there are natural disasters caused by hurricanes,floods,cyclones,etc.The article deals with various aspects of disaster management in a fertiliser plant.The causes,phases and categories of disasters as well as the elements of disaster management planning including pre-and post-emergency activities to be undertaken by plant management are explained.Brief details of two case histories have been provided in fertiliser plants wherein emergencies which occurred were successfully dealt with before taking the shape of disasters.
