Applying early nitrogen to winter barley crops could help increase yields by as much as 0.5t/ha. That's according to work by the Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA), GrowHow and Syngenta.The five-year average yield of winter barley is 6.5t/ha but the record stands at 12.2t/ha set in 1989. Many crops are grown with low applications of nitrogen to meet market specifications, but the work carried out by the three companies shows increasingthe plant's ability to intercept light during the stem extension period of growth can have a significandy-positive impact on the crop at harvest.
