This paper presents an improvement of a voltage utilization factor and harmonics reduction for a STATCOM. It is essential that the voltage utilization factor is improved in order to reduce the cost of the STATCOM. A high efficient PWM control is applied and tested to the prototype of the STATCOM. The voltage utilization factor by the control can be 1.2 times as large as the one by a conventional control with the reduction of 5th and 7th harmonics. It is verified that additional reduction of harmonics can be realized by the adjustment of the phase between the voltages of multiple stages in the case of multiple STATCOMs.
