To fully understand and appreciate the current environment one will be working in, it is important to look back a few years to gain some insight into the dynamics of network security and how it has evolved to meet the maturing threats present when connecting any private network to the public Internet. Before beginning, the author would like to clarify that the opinions reflected in this document are his and his alone. Further, they reflect his experiences working in the field of network security as well as interpretation of available statistical data. Statistical data on network security trends abounds on the Internet, and one should consider that data with the longstanding caveat that "statistics are merely data manipulated to meet one's purpose."
