Modernisation of Process Control Systems for Operational Efficiency

Indian fertiliser industry consists of plants which are of vintage of 16 to 48 years. The last greenfield urea project came in 1995 and a brownfield project in 1999. The last NP/NPK complex was commissioned in the year 2000. Subsequently, a number of plants have increased capacity either by debottlenecking the capacity of ammonia-urea plants or by adding extra production stream in NP/NPK complex fertiliser plants. All these plants have been operating continuously with high on-stream efficiency and energy efficiency. Even more creditable is the fact that all plants have achieved efficiency levels much higher than the designed efficiency for energy and raw material consumption. This has been possible due to continuous capital investment in revamp and replacement of old equipments.
