Two kinds of growing seedlings: on raised bed in the field and in pro-trays using coco-peat as the substrate; two band placements of ~(35)S-labelled superphosphate at 5 and 10 cm depths and 3 levels of superphosphate at 60, 80 and 100% of recommended P dose were evaluated for yield and S use efficiency using 'Omphalos' F1 hybrid cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata). The raised bed seedlings of cabbage were more vigorous, well-nourished in terms of seedling length, girth and dry weight of shoot and root. They showed more prominent tap root than the pro-tray seedlings. The crop grown from transplanting raised bed seedling produced a significantly higher yield and dry matter production of head portion and the whole plant compared to that grown from pro-tray seedlings. However, the cabbage grown using raised bed seedlings showed significantly lower S content and S uptake in all parts except in the head portion. Sulphur derived from fertiliser (Sdff, %) and fertiliser S uptake and fertiliser S utilization of head portion and the whole plant was higher in cabbage grown from raised bed seedlings relative to that grown on pro-trays. Between 5 and 10 cm deep placement of superphosphate in general, the latter was superior in respect of yield and different parameters of S use from the fertiliser. Among different levels of superphosphate, 100% level was significantly better than lower doses in respect of yield and various parameters of S utilization from superphosphate. In conclusion, 100 % dosage produced the highest yield, total dry matter and total S uptake when superphosphate was banded at 10 cm depth.
