Bioefficacy of some botanical formulations against bollworm complex in cotton

Field studies were conducted in New Delhi, India, during the 2003 and 2004 kharif seasons with American cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) cv. Pusa 8-6 to determine the bioefficacy of various formulations based on Eucalyptus and Callistemon extracts against bollworms (i.e. Helicoverpa armigera, Earias vittella and Pectinophora gossypiella) in cotton. The formulation based on Eucalyptus crude extract (0.5%) and its fraction (0.3%) was significantly effective in reducing the incidence of bollworms in shed reproductives, green and open bolls and conversely increased the yield of seed cotton (1182.1 kg/ha) and (1055.2 kg/ha) compared with the untreated control (646.4 kg/ha). The crude extracts and fractions of Callistemon did not prove effective against bollworms. The results suggest that the biopesticide formulations based on Eucalyptus could be recommended as a component of sustainable management in cotton crop.
