Ford's "New Edge" design philosophy has been shown in its boldest form yet by Cougar. To be marketed as a Mercury in the US, the car retains a close resemblance to the MC2 concept, though every surface is different. Engines and drivetrains come straight from the Mystique/Contour/Mondeo family. A 2.0-litre 16-valve Zetec engine provides the base, with a 2.5-litre Duratec V6 offered as an alternative. Both can be mated to either an MTX75 five-speed manual or CD4E four-speed automatic gearbox. The 2.0-litre 16-valve DOHC Zetec engine delivers 96 kW (130 ps) at 5,700 rpm and has a peak torque of 176 Nm at 3,700 rpm. Ford claims that at least 80 per cent of this torque is available between 1,200 and 6,250 rpm, and that 90 per cent is developed between 2,100 and 5,800 rpm.
