In planning this issue related to violence, I was reminded of an article (Colloff, 2016) about the first victim of the Texas campus shooting in 1967, Claire Wilson. She was 8 months pregnant at the time of the shooting. Her boyfriend and her unborn child were killed. Claire's life course was decidedly impacted by this single act of violence. She was never able to have children due to her extensive injuries. To make matters worse, her unborn son was not often - if at all - acknowledged as a victim of the shootings and, as this was the first incident of its kind, it was largely swept under the rug. Colloff explains the mass shooting was referred to as "the accident." She often visited the library to look for photographs of her boyfriend who died next to her and to read about what had happened. She searched for confirmation of what happened to her that day. As a woman and a mother, my heart aches for Claire and what she endures.
