Coffee is the most important commodity traded widely next only to petroleum products in the world. The surplus production of coffee in traditional coffee growing countries has resulted in low price where in India is not an exception to it. Coffee is apopular beverage all over the world. In India, traditionally Arabica and Robusta coffee are the two important commercial species of coffee cultivated in the hills and valleys of Western ghats of India. In India coffee is cultivated in 348995 hectares with an average production of 300,609 MT per annum and 60 percent of the produce is exported contributing about 2000 crores of rupees to the Indian exchequer. Karnataka is the largest producer contributing 69.4% of the total production followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Kodagu district in Karnataka contributes 50.14 per cent area and 41.96 per cent production.
