Economics of different coconut based cropping models under alluvial plains of West Bengal

Coconut based cropping models i.e (i) coconut + guava + elephant-foot yam + colocasia, (ii) coconut + lime + ginger + bhindi, (iii) coconut + lemon + turmeric + amaranth and (iv) coconut as a monocrop were evaluated at HRS, Mondouri, BCKV, West Bengalduring the period 1998 to 2001 in a 17 year old coconut (cv. ECT) plantation. Economic assessment of different models revealed that maximum net return was realised from Model II (Rs. 70.786/ha) followed by and Model III (Rs. 54,422/ha), Model I (Rs. 40,778/ha) and Model IV (Rs. 21,067/ha). It was also observed that multiple cropping in coconut plantation under recommended package of practices of both main crop and intercrop, had no adverse effect on production of coconut. The crop combination under Model II i.e. Coconut + Ginger + Lime + Bhindi was found the best, assuring an additional return of Rs. 49721 over monocropping.
