Tremendous growth of the Internet traffic and wide spread use of the internet protocol (IP) require an increase of switching capacity at backbone network nodes. We have developed a prototype Optical Cross Connect (OXC) that can overcome the capacity limit of electrical switching by switching in the optical prototype OXC implemented optical switches, the GMPLS (Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching) protocols, and multiple class protections. This paper reports its architecture and featured technologies and examines the OXC's interworking capabilities with IP, and issues with all optical networks.
