Our laboratory has studied compensatory mammary, growth in several animal species using dietary regimens that combine periods of energy restriction with periods of realimentation (Kim et al., 1998; Moon and Par, 1999; Ford an Park, 2001). Mammary development is minimal during the energy restriction phase, whereas the ensuing energy realimentation phase stimulates more rapid development of the mammary gland (i.e. compensatory growth). Animals reared on these dietary regimens have increased milk production, which may be attributed to enhanced mammary development. Therefore, our objective was to study the effects of glucose restriction and refeeding on mammary cell proliferation and differentiation in culture.
