A simple procedure for the freezing of large batches of yeast inocula (up to 150 samples) for storage at liquid nitrogen temperatures with the retention of high viability after thawing is described. The recovered frozen cells were examined using a flow microcalorimetric procedure which enables a rapid determination of viability. The application of such inocula to antibiotic assays and growth studies is discussed.
