Architect bruce buchanan makes an unlikely eco-warrior - for one thing, he drives everywhere. But when he decided to design and build his own house in rural Gloucestershire he was determined to adopt a green approach. "The environmental aspect was quite important, and I wanted to build it with sustainable materials," he says. "But I was also looking at the cost-saving potential offered by self-build, and wanted to design a house that was functional to live in and energy-efficient."
