Venezuela’s supreme court has set the stage for President Nicolas Maduro to begin legal proceedings to impeach and fire attorney general Luisa Ortega Diaz following her criticism of Maduro’s plans to rewrite the constitution. Up to 30 of the supreme court’s 32 judges yesterday voted affirmatively in response to a petition filed by national assembly deputy Pedro Carreno, a senior figure in the ruling Psuv party, asking the court whether legal proceedings for professional misconduct could be initiated against Ortega Diaz. The attorney general is a longtime senior figure in the Psuv and bitter constitutional foe of president Maduro’s proposed constituent assembly — a select group that would be charged with rewriting the country’s constitution.
