Experimental and anaiystical investigations are carried out to study the effect of shear lag in simply supported prestressed concrete box girder. Experimental results are compared with the analytical results obtained from finite element analysis using ABAQUS6.5. It is observed that, the effect of share lag decreases away from the load and presence of top flange side cantilevers helps in decreasing the longitudinal stresses but however, excessive flange widths are not effective. In this paper design considerations for a concrete box girder are presented and also a simplified method generated from extensive analytical studies is suggested for estimating the peak flange stresses.
