CHICK EMBRYO BRAIN CULTURES ENRICHED FOR NEURONS OR ASTROGLIAL CELLS SUPPORT THE REPLICATION OF INFLUENZA A, B, AND C VIRUSES

A number of methods have been reported which show that neurons or astroglial cells can be obtained from embryonic brain tissue (1,8,15,17). These cells can be used to study cell maturation, cellular characteristics, the effects of drugs, hormones, virus infection, or various aspects of neurological research (5,7,10,12,18,19). We report here techniques to obtain cultures enriched for either neurons or astroglial cells from embryonic chick brain using simple procedures and readily available materials and reagents.
