India's agricultural development under the new economic regime: policy perspective and strategy for the 12th five year plan.

This paper presents a descriptive account of recent trends in Indian agriculture and identifies some key economic, institutional and technological policy issues that need to be addressed in the 12th Five Year Plan to accelerate growth in the agricultural sector. Trends and issues concerning the acreage and production of major crops, the number of small and marginal farmers and fragmenting farms, the degradation of natural resources, public expenditure on agriculture, input use efficiency, agricultural subsidies, price support, and agricultural credit, are discussed.
