Survey on Fertility Status of Cotton growing soils of Guntur District in Andhra Pradesh

Survey and analysis of the 100 soil samples of 9 different mandais in Guntur district was carried out to assess an overall picture of physico-chemical characteristics and fertility status of the cotton growing fields of Guntur district. Soil samples were analysed for pH, E.G., O.C., ammonical form of nitrogen, available phosphorus, available potassium, available calcium, magnesium, sulphur and zinc. The pH, E.G. and O.C. of the soils ranged from 7.54-8.69,0.095-3.23 dsm1 and 0.19-0.97% with a mean value of 8.16,0.37 and 0.67% respectively. Available P, K, Zn and ammonical form of nitrogen were found in the range of 4.60-20.33 ppm, 230.75 ppm, 1.70 ppm and 92.26 ppm respectively. In general the soils are alkaline in reaction having low to high O.C.,available P, K and Zn are in medium to high range. Ammonical form of nitrogen found to be in low to medium range. Therefore judicious fertilization of N, P and micronutrients are required for sustained production of cotton.
